The rapid economic and technological development of modern society is becoming more and more rapid, while people’s lifestyles have not been able to keep up with the speed of economic and technological development. The conflict between the rapidly developing society and the traditional lifestyles of people living in the society in many aspects will be a very serious hidden danger for the future society. In the New Wave science fiction movement of the 1990s, literary creators portrayed the concept of “cyberpunk”, reflecting the collapse of social structures in the future due to the incompatibility of advanced science and technology with traditional life.
The theme of this project is based on these concepts and explores the possibility of combining the future’s fast-growing economy and technology with people’s traditional way of life in the form of architecture, i.e., “the perfect ending of cyberpunk” that maximizes the preservation of the existing artistic elements of “cyberpunk” culture. While preserving the artistic elements and characteristics of the “cyberpunk” culture, the project also incorporates traditional lifestyles to form a future in which the social structure does not collapse.
The project adopts the same “Metonymic Landscape” design technique as Dongdaemun Design Plaza, in which the representative spatial elements of the project site in Hoehyeon-dong are “metaphorically” translated into the form of the building itself, and the internal functions incorporate various traditional functional areas of Hoehyeon-dong. The purpose of the design is to create a landmark-like commercial complex in Hoehyeon-dong.
